Biathlon EM 25
The last time the big biathlon family came to Martello was just three weeks ago. Back then, the IBU Cup was held in the heart of the Stelvio National Park. The OC Biathlon Martello mastered the organization of the European Championship dress rehearsal with flying colors. Despite the most adverse weather conditions - it snowed heavily every day at the weekend and the cross-country trails, shooting range and stadium areas had to be cleared of fresh snow - fair and exciting competitions took place in the South Tyrolean biathlon stronghold.
Now the focus of the team around OC President Georg Altstätter, who is also mayor of the municipality of Martello, is already on preparations for the major event in 12 months' time. “The planning for the European Biathlon Championships is in full swing. As part of this year's IBU Cup, we tested some innovations that we want to keep for the European Championships - such as a shuttle service from Gasthof Waldheim to the stadium. Our team is highly motivated and looking forward to the coming year, even though we are all aware that we are facing a big task,” emphasizes Georg Altstätter.
450 biathletes and officials expected in Martello
Although the competition program for the European Championships in Martell has not yet been finalized, it is likely to include the individual competition, the sprint and the pursuit for both men and women, as well as a mixed and a single-mixed relay. A total of eight competitions are therefore expected to take place, two more than at an IBU Cup. Around 450 biathletes, coaches, support staff and officials are expected to attend the European Championships in Martell.
“These are numbers that match those of the Junior World Championships, which were held here in Martello 17 years ago. We therefore have the experience and the necessary knowledge to successfully organize a major event like the European Championships. We can also count on the support of our countless volunteers from the entire Venosta Valley and our sponsors. This makes us confident that we will not only experience a great sporting event in a year's time, but will also cut a fine figure as hosts,” says Georg Altstätter, who will receive the official flag for next year's European Championships in Brezno-Osrblie on Sunday.
